Eckhart Tolle: Eckhart Tolle DE, Eckhart Tolle Francais (French), Eckhart Tolle Espanol (Spanish)

Eckhart Tolle's teachings are available in several languages:

Eckhart Tolle: Eckhart Tolle on ego, power of now by Eckhart Tolle

"To the ego, the present moment hardly exists. Only past and future are considered important. This total reversal of the truth accounts for the fact that in the ego mode the mind is so dysfunctional. It is always concerned with keeping the past alive, because without it - who are you?"

Eckhart Tolle: Eckhart Tolle quotes

Eckhart Tolle quotes:

Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is Life itself, it is an insane way to live.

All cravings are the mind seeking salvation or fulfillment in external things and in the future as a substitute for the joy of Being. As long as I am my mind, I am those cravings, those needs, wants, attachments, and aversions, and apart from them there is no "I" except as a mere possibility, an unfulfilled potential, a seed that has not yet sprouted.

Your mind is an instrument, a tool. It is there to be used for a specific task, and when the task is completed, you lay it down. As it is, I would say about 80 to 90 percent of most people's thinking is not only repetitive and useless, but because of its dysfunctional and often negative nature, much of it is also harmful. Observe your mind and you will find this to be true. It causes a serious leakage of vital energy.

Fear arises through identification with form, whether it be a material possession, a physical body, a social role, a self-image, a thought, or an emotion. It arises through unawareness of the formless inner dimension of consciousness or spirit, which is the essence of who you are. You are trapped in object consciousness, unaware of the dimension of inner space which alone is true freedom.

Even a stone, and more easily a flower or a bird, could show you the way back to God, to the Source, to yourself. When you look at it or hold it & let it be without imposing a word of mental label on it, a sense of awe, of wonder, arises within you. Its essence silently communicates itself to you and reflects your own essence back to you.

Thinking, or more precisely identification with thinking, gives rise to and maintains the ego, which, in our Western society in particular, is out of control. It believes it is real and tries hard to maintain its supremacy. Negative states of mind, such as anger, resentment, fear, envy, and jealousy, are products of the ego.

The insanity of the collective egoic mind, amplified by science and technology, is rapidly taking our species to the brink of disaster. Evolve or die: that is our only choice now.

Internal and external are ultimately one. When you no longer perceive the world as hostile, there is no more fear, and when there is no more fear, you think, speak and act differently. Love and compassion arise, and they affect the world.

True salvation is freedom from negativity, and above all from past and future as a psychological need.

Those who have not found their true wealth, which is the radiant joy of Being and the deep, unshakable peace that comes with it, are beggars, even if they have great material wealth. They are looking outside for scraps of pleasure or fulfillment, for validation, security, or love, while they have a treasure within that not only includes all those things but is infinitely greater than anything the world can offer.

The present moment has always been available to spiritual seekers, but as long as you are seeking you are not available to the present moment. "Seeking" implies that you are looking to the future for some answer, or for some achievement, spiritual or otherwise. Everybody is in the seeking mode, seeking to add something to who they are, whether it be money, relationships, possessions, knowledge, status.. or spiritual attainment.

There are two levels to your pain: the pain that you create now, and the pain from the past that still lives on in your mind and body. Ceasing to create pain in the present and dissolving past pain - this is what I want to talk about now.

Eckhart Tolle: A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose

"A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose" is the follow-up to the book" The Power of Now", both written by Eckhart Tolle. Published in 2005, it has been on the New York Times Best Seller list, and has grown in popularity since Oprah Winfrey recommended it for her book club in January of 2008, this was followed by a 10-week live online seminar ("webinar") with Tolle, which started on March 3, 2008, for which over 700,000 people from more than 100 countries, registered on Oprah.com, and according to Barnes & Noble, it later became the fastest-selling title in the history of Oprah's Book Club, which has selected 61 books since 1996, and within four weeks of the announcement sold 3.5 million copies.

By 2009, 4.7 million copies were in print. The book is focused on spirituality rather than on any particular religious denomination.

Eckhart Tolle - New Earth: Awakening To Your Life's Purpose

In "New Earth: Awakening To Your Life's Purpose", Eckhart Tolle begins talking about our identification with things. Things that we use every day for self enhancement or things we have become attached to and become obsessed with. How inferiority changes the way we act with other people and creates an ego that we didn’t normally have. The pain body is when human tendencies perpetuate old emotions and every human carries around this old pain. The identification is what causes all the reoccurring pain in the individual. Being able to know where the pain is coming from will prevent the pain body to renew itself through you. Our inner consciousness can change the world by not just being satisfied with what you do. Our destinies can be determined by how we carry out are actions and how we can fulfill them with the best possible consciousness.

In "New Earth: Awakening To Your Life's Purpose", Eckhart Tolle explains the several ways to finding a more peace ful way to live. There are three stages in the inner consciousness of an individual. The three stages are acceptance, enjoyment, and enthusiasm. Acceptance is when you may not enjoy what you are doing but you have to be able to accept it. This is essentially being able to take responsibility in your life and to take action with certain things that are not enjoyable at all and to find peace within these activities. Enjoyment is the next modality and it is being able to make the present moment a pivotal part of your life. This doesn’t mean that if you want to do something that you will find enjoyment in it. It means that with everything you do that you need to enjoy it in the present; you can’t let the moments pass you by or tell yourself you will enjoy something in the near future. The final modality of the inner consciousness is enthusiasm. Enthusiasm entails that there is a deeper enjoyment in the actions you do and being able to work towards a final goal.

The core of Tolle's thought, in brief, is that the whole of humanity is trapped in self-created worlds of thought. An individual will experience this as their self-concept. Within these labyrinthine stories it is impossible to achieve lasting happiness. As they are fictional and static, all self concepts are subject to destruction and decay, a process Tolle cites as the main causal factor in human suffering.

The 'escape' from this ongoing prison is a direct experience of the sublime, the infinite - that which stands outside, before and beyond the categorizations and divisions of conceptual thought. A key way which Tolle suggests this can be done is to focus one's attention on the present moment.

A New Earth: Awakening To Your Life's Purpose is a more detailed examination of the ideas introduced in The Power of Now, although both books revolve around this theme of living in the present moment, there are significant differences between A New Earth and The Power Of Now. Where the Power Of Now focuses on the self-help aspects of Tolle's work, A New Earth contains a much deeper and more detailed exploration of Tolle's world-view.

Tolle spends more time on the philosophical, religious and social ramifications of his theories, culminating in tentative descriptions of a future in which compassion has replaced conflict as the core motivating principle for humanity.

Eckhart Tolle believes that the earliest messengers of such a transformation were in the forms of Buddha and Jesus and other such great teachers. At those particular time periods in history these great teachers’ messages were hazy and misunderstood. His purpose of this book is to provide the readers with a sense of awakening. Tolle isn’t trying to awaken the individual with new beliefs but his belief is that a shift in consciousness will get society in touch with the now. Ego has a large impact on all of us and it usually comes in the form of I, Me, or Myself. when your mind constantly having these unconscious thoughts of life and how stressful or depressing it can be, awareness can snap you out of it. “Life isn’t as serious as my mind makes it out to be”.

Eckhart Tolle - The Power of Now

Eckhart Tolle says that his book, The Power of Now, is "a restatement for our time of that one timeless spiritual teaching, the essence of all religions" and that religions "have become so overlaid with extraneous matter that their spiritual substance has become almost completely obscured",[21] that they have become "to a large extent ... divisive rather than unifying forces" and that they have become "themselves part of the insanity".

Eckhart Tolle writes that "the most significant thing that can happen to a human being is the separation process of thinking and awareness" and that awareness is "the space in which thoughts exist". Tolle says that "the primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it".

According to Tolle's official website, "at the core of Tolle's teachings lies the transformation of consciousness, a spiritual awakening that he sees as the next step in human evolution. An essential aspect of this awakening consists in transcending our ego-based state of consciousness. This is a prerequisite not only for personal happiness but also for the ending of violent conflict endemic on our planet."

In his book A New Earth, Tolle defines the term "ego" as an "illusory sense of self" based on one's memories and thoughts. He also uses the term "pain-body", which he defines in "A New Earth" as "an accumulation of old emotional pain".

Tolle's philosophy is that by removing oneself from thoughts and ego and by focusing on each present moment the individual will have greater appreciation of his/her life.[3] This philosophy encourages people to overcome the dominance of the mind and ego over the body, which Tolle calls the "pain body".

Tiger Woods Statement Text:Tiger Woods, Buddhism teaches about cravings

Tiger Woods, and everyone else who honestly decided to be a better person in a better world, can find in Buddhism an approach to act properly, towards all. Buddhism means to value the Three Jewels: buddha, dharma, sangha. And to act accordingly. Buddhism, in reality, should be called Dharmanity, because practitioners live according to the Dharma laws, and in addition to the historic Buddha, several other buddhas lived before and after Sakyamuni. The Buddhist community (sangha) is forgiving and helpful; at the end the responsibility of one's rightful living rest on oneself.

Tiger Woods said in the past he doesn't believe in full enlightenment. The word "awakening" is more appropriate to Buddhism than the word "enlightenment". Buddhism is about awakening, opening our eyes, and see the world as it is. Awakening is here and now, not an esoteric secret knowledge; awakening here and now is what Tiger and his family needs.

Tiger can meditate, for example on Metta/Loving kindness, to restore his balance. Buddhism requires a person to be honest, to oneself and the world; to understand it is normal to feel pain, while suffering is constructed by an unskilled mind; to understand it is normal to feel pleasure, while attachment is constructed by an unskilled mind.

Text of Tiger Woods' statement Friday, as transcribed by ASAP Sports:
Good morning, and thank you for joining me. Many of you in this room are my friends. Many of you in this room know me. Many of you have cheered for me or you've worked with me or you've supported me.
Now every one of you has good reason to be critical of me. I want to say to each of you, simply and directly, I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behaviour I engaged in.

I know people want to find out how I could be so selfish and so foolish. People want to know how I could have done these things to my wife Elin and to my children. And while I have always tried to be a private person, there are some things I want to say.

Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behaviour. As Elin pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words; it will come from my behaviour over time. We have a lot to discuss; however, what we say to each other will remain between the two of us.

I am also aware of the pain my behaviour has caused to those of you in this room. I have let you down, and I have let down my fans. For many of you, especially my friends, my behaviour has been a personal disappointment. To those of you who work for me, I have let you down personally and professionally. My behaviour has caused considerable worry to my business partners.

To everyone involved in my foundation, including my staff, board of directors, sponsors, and most importantly, the young students we reach, our work is more important than ever. Thirteen years ago, my dad and I envisioned helping young people achieve their dreams through education. This work remains unchanged and will continue to grow. From the Learning Center students in Southern California to the Earl Woods scholars in Washington, D.C., millions of kids have changed their lives, and I am dedicated to making sure that continues.

But still, I know I have bitterly disappointed all of you. I have made you question who I am and how I could have done the things I did. I am embarrassed that I have put you in this position.

For all that I have done, I am so sorry.

I have a lot to atone for, but there is one issue I really want to discuss. Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It angers me that people would fabricate a story like that. Elin never hit me that night or any other night. There has never been an episode of domestic violence in our marriage, ever. Elin has shown enormous grace and poise throughout this ordeal. Elin deserves praise, not blame.

The issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behaviour. I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable, and I am the only person to blame.

I stopped living by the core values that I was taught to believe in. I knew my actions were wrong, but I convinced myself that normal rules didn't apply. I never thought about who I was hurting. Instead, I thought only about myself. I ran straight through the boundaries that a married couple should live by. I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn't have to go far to find them.
I was wrong. I was foolish. I don't get to play by different rules. The same boundaries that apply to everyone apply to me. I brought this shame on myself. I hurt my wife, my kids, my mother, my wife's family, my friends, my foundation, and kids all around the world who admired me.

I've had a lot of time to think about what I've done. My failures have made me look at myself in a way I never wanted to before. It's now up to me to make amends, and that starts by never repeating the mistakes I've made. It's up to me to start living a life of integrity.

I once heard, and I believe it's true, it's not what you achieve in life that matters; it's what you overcome. Achievements on the golf course are only part of setting an example. Character and decency are what really count.

Parents used to point to me as a role model for their kids. I owe all those families a special apology. I want to say to them that I am truly sorry.

It's hard to admit that I need help, but I do. For 45 days from the end of December to early February, I was in inpatient therapy receiving guidance for the issues I'm facing. I have a long way to go. But I've taken my first steps in the right direction.

As I proceed, I understand people have questions. I understand the press wants to ask me for the details and the times I was unfaithful. I understand people want to know whether Elin and I will remain together. Please know that as far as I'm concerned, every one of these questions and answers is a matter between Elin and me. These are issues between a husband and a wife.

Some people have made up things that never happened. They said I used performance-enhancing drugs. This is completely and utterly false. Some have written things about my family. Despite the damage I have done, I still believe it is right to shield my family from the public spotlight. They did not do these things; I did.
I have always tried to maintain a private space for my wife and children. They have been kept separate from my sponsors, my commercial endorsements. When my children were born, we only released photographs so that the paparazzi could not chase them. However, my behaviour doesn't make it right for the media to follow my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter to school and report the school's location. They staked out my wife and they pursued my mom. Whatever my wrongdoings, for the sake of my family, please leave my wife and kids alone.

I recognize I have brought this on myself, and I know above all I am the one who needs to change. I owe it to my family to become a better person. I owe it to those closest to me to become a better man. That's where my focus will be.

I have a lot of work to do, and I intend to dedicate myself to doing it. Part of following this path for me is Buddhism, which my mother taught me at a young age. People probably don't realize it, but I was raised a Buddhist, and I actively practiced my faith from childhood until I drifted away from it in recent years. Buddhism teaches that a craving for things outside ourselves causes an unhappy and pointless search for security. It teaches me to stop following every impulse and to learn restraint. Obviously I lost track of what I was taught.

As I move forward, I will continue to receive help because I've learned that's how people really do change. Starting tomorrow, I will leave for more treatment and more therapy. I would like to thank my friends at Accenture and the players in the field this week for understanding why I'm making these remarks today.
In therapy I've learned the importance of looking at my spiritual life and keeping in balance with my professional life. I need to regain my balance and be centred so I can save the things that are most important to me, my marriage and my children.

That also means relying on others for help. I've learned to seek support from my peers in therapy, and I hope someday to return that support to others who are seeking help.
